Is stick drift covered by warranty?
Often, but not automatically. Manufacturers cover defects, and how they treat drift depends on the brand, the region and whether the controller has been opened. Here is what each one says.
| PlayStation | Xbox | Nintendo Switch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer warranty | 1 year in the US and Canada; other regions have their own terms | Depends on where you bought it – check by serial number | 24 months in the EEA, UK and Switzerland |
| Stick drift | “Button or analog stick issue” is a repair category | Replacement request by serial number | Joy-Con stick repairs free in the EEA, UK and Switzerland until further notice |
| Where to start | PlayStation Repairs | Xbox controller replacement page | Nintendo support for your country |
PlayStation (DualSense, DualSense Edge)
Sony’s limited warranty for accessories in the US and Canada covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. It applies to the original purchaser with proof of purchase and excludes abuse, misuse and neglect. Sony repairs the controller or replaces it with a new or factory-recertified unit.
Claims start at PlayStation Repairs, which lists “Button or analog stick issue” among its controller problems. Before that, Sony asks you to reset the controller and update the PS5 system software. Outside the US and Canada the terms differ, so check the PlayStation support site for your country. On the DualSense Edge the stick modules can be swapped without tools, and Sony sells replacements.
Xbox (Wireless Controller, Elite Series 2)
Microsoft handles controller claims on its controller replacement page. You enter the controller’s 14-character serial number, which sits inside the battery compartment below the barcode – on the Elite Series 2 it is on the back, lower centre. Signing in there shows the warranty status. A controller that has never been connected, or was first connected less than 48 hours ago, may not be recognised yet.
According to Microsoft, warranty terms depend on where you bought the device; repairs within warranty are free, and out-of-warranty service costs a fee. Before you claim, try the recalibration tool – but Microsoft itself notes that it can’t fix drift caused by normal wear and tear.
Nintendo (Joy-Con, Pro Controller)
In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Nintendo says it will repair Joy-Con sticks that don’t respond correctly – the problem usually called drift – without charge until further notice. That applies whether the cause is a defect or wear and tear, and even after the 24-month manufacturer’s warranty has run out. Nintendo can refuse if the Joy-Con was opened or repaired by anyone other than Nintendo or its partners, modified, damaged by accident, used commercially or harmed by unauthorised accessories.
That statement covers the original Joy-Con. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 page offers a repair after troubleshooting but doesn’t repeat the no-charge wording, and the Pro Controller has its own support article. In the US and Canada you can request a Joy-Con repair online after trying calibration; that page doesn’t state a price. Send in only the controller, not the console. Calibrate first – see how to calibrate Switch controller sticks.
Your legal rights in the EU and UK
A manufacturer’s warranty is a voluntary promise. Separately, the law gives you rights against the seller – the shop you bought from, not the brand:
- EU: you always have a legal guarantee of at least 2 years from the day you received the goods. The seller must repair or replace faulty goods at no cost, or give a partial or full refund if that isn’t possible. If a fault appears within the first year, it is presumed to have existed at delivery (two years in some countries). A manufacturer’s warranty can add to this but never reduce it. The guarantee covers faults that existed at delivery, so a seller may argue that drift is wear – a measured result helps.
- UK: under the Consumer Rights Act you have legal rights for up to 6 years (5 in Scotland) if goods are faulty. Citizens Advice notes that in the first 6 months it is usually easier to use these rights than a warranty.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Details vary by country; a local consumer advice centre can help with a specific case.
How to document drift for a claim
- Measure it. Run the stick drift test with the controller resting on a table. Note which stick drifts, the peak offset and the grade.
- Save the result link. Press “Copy result link” after the test. The link opens a page with the same numbers, so support staff can see them without installing anything.
- Film it. A short video of the controller lying untouched while a game or the test shows movement is easy to attach to a support request.
- Test on a second device. If the stick also drifts on a computer, the controller is the cause, not the console or the game.
- Keep the receipt and serial number. Sony’s warranty requires proof of purchase; Microsoft identifies the controller by its serial number.
- Don’t open the controller. Opening it can cost you the warranty, and Nintendo names it as a reason to refuse a free repair.
Our grades are our own guide, not a manufacturer standard. Describe the symptom too – “the character walks without input” – alongside the numbers. For everything you can try before or after a claim, see how to fix stick drift.
Stick drift warranty FAQ
Is PS5 controller stick drift covered by warranty?
In the US and Canada, Sony’s accessories warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year from purchase, and PlayStation Repairs lists analog stick issues as a repair category. Terms in other regions differ, so check Sony’s support site for your country.
Is Xbox controller drift covered by warranty?
Microsoft lets you request a replacement by entering the controller’s serial number on Xbox Support, where you can also check the warranty status. Repairs within warranty are free; the terms depend on where you bought the controller.
Does Nintendo fix Joy-Con drift for free?
In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Nintendo says it repairs Joy-Con stick problems at no charge until further notice – even after the warranty ends and even when the cause is wear. It can refuse if the Joy-Con was opened or modified. Elsewhere, check Nintendo support for your region.
Does opening the controller void the warranty?
It can. Nintendo names opening or repair by anyone other than Nintendo or its partners as a reason to refuse a free Joy-Con repair. If your controller is still covered, claim first and repair it yourself later.
What can I do when the warranty has run out?
In the EU and UK you may still have legal rights against the seller. Microsoft offers out-of-warranty service for a fee. Otherwise, replacing the stick module yourself or at a repair shop is the usual fix.
