What is stick drift?
Stick drift is when an analog stick reports movement although nobody is touching it – your character walks on its own, the camera slowly turns or a menu keeps scrolling.
How an analog stick works
Each stick measures two directions: left–right (X) and up–down (Y). In most standard controllers every direction has a potentiometer – a small wiper that slides over a resistive track. Its position changes the voltage the controller reads, and that becomes the stick position. When you let go, springs pull the stick back to the centre, where both values should read zero.
What causes drift
- Wear. The wiper rubs on the track every time the stick moves. Over time the track wears and the reading at rest no longer matches the centre.
- Dust and debris. Dirt that gets into the mechanism can disturb the contact or stop the stick from returning cleanly to the centre.
- Physical damage. Drops, moisture or a bent stick can shift the sensor or the springs.
Symptoms
Movement without input is the classic sign: a character that creeps forward, a camera that slowly pans, an aim that pulls to one side or a cursor that keeps moving in menus. It often starts small and only appears in games with a small deadzone.
How much offset is normal?
Almost no stick rests at exactly zero. Games ignore a small area around the centre – the deadzone – so a tiny offset has no effect. As a guide, the stick drift test grades a resting offset under 3% as no drift and 15% or more as severe. These thresholds are our own, not a manufacturer standard.
How to prevent it
Keep the controller clean and away from food and liquids, and don’t store it with the sticks pressed. Sticks with contactless sensors – Hall effect or TMR – avoid the wear that causes most drift. If your stick already drifts, see how to fix stick drift.
FAQ
Is stick drift a hardware fault?
Usually yes – it comes from the stick’s sensor or mechanism, not from the game. A quick way to tell: if the stick also drifts in a browser test on a computer, the controller itself is the cause.
Can a controller drift on only one stick?
Yes, and that is common. Each stick has its own sensors and wears on its own, so test both.
Does stick drift get worse?
Drift from wear usually gets worse over time. Drift from dust can come and go.
