How to test an Xbox controller on PC

  • USB cable: Series X|S controllers use USB-C, most Xbox One controllers micro-USB. Windows recognises them without extra software. Use a cable that carries data – some only charge.
  • Bluetooth: all Series X|S controllers and the Xbox One controllers released with the Xbox One S (model 1708) and later have Bluetooth. Hold the pair button on top until the Xbox button flashes quickly, then add the controller in your computer’s Bluetooth settings.
  • Xbox Wireless Adapter: older Xbox One controllers without Bluetooth connect to a Windows PC wirelessly only through Microsoft’s adapter – or use a cable.
  • Mac: pair by Bluetooth. Apple lists the Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controllers, including the Series X|S controllers and the Elite Series 2, as supported.
  • Then open this page, ideally in Chrome or Edge, and press any button. The tester above shows the controller live.

Xbox button names in the tester

The tester uses the browser’s standard layout, which shares one label for Xbox and PlayStation buttons in the same position:

The Xbox button and the Share button sit outside the parts every browser reports. On Windows, pressing the Xbox button may open the Game Bar instead of reaching the page.

What the browser can read from an Xbox controller

  • Both sticks, the face and shoulder buttons, View and Menu, the D-pad and both triggers as analog values from 0 to 100 %.
  • The two rumble motors in the grips – in Chrome and Edge, via the Weak, Strong and Both buttons.
  • Not tested here: the impulse trigger motors. The Gamepad specification describes a trigger-rumble effect for them, but this page only plays the standard two-motor rumble.
  • Elite Series 2: the back paddles usually don’t appear as separate buttons, and profiles with custom stick curves, deadzones or trigger locks change the values you see. Switch to the default profile for a raw reading.

Xbox controller tester FAQ

How do I test an Xbox controller on PC?

Connect it by USB cable, Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, open this page in Chrome or Edge and press any button. Every button, trigger and stick then shows up live. Nothing needs to be installed.

Why doesn’t my Xbox controller show up?

Press a button while the page is open – browsers only reveal a controller after an input. Then check that the USB cable carries data, that the controller isn’t connected to a switched-on Xbox nearby, and close apps such as Steam that can take over the controller.

Can I test the Xbox button and the Share button?

Not reliably. Both sit outside the browser’s standard button layout. Chrome and Edge may report the Share button as Button 17, and on Windows the Xbox button may open the Game Bar instead of reaching the browser.

Does it work with the Xbox Elite Series 2?

Yes. Sticks, buttons and triggers show up like on a standard Xbox controller. The back paddles usually don’t appear as separate buttons, and profiles with custom curves or trigger locks change the values – use the default profile for a raw reading.

Does vibration work with an Xbox controller?

In Chrome and Edge it usually does – use the Weak, Strong and Both buttons. Other browsers and some Bluetooth connections don’t pass vibration through. The impulse trigger motors are not tested.
